Wind-Rated Pergola

Which pergolas are rated for coastal wind?

Only Hanso claims anything near hurricane-level wind (up to 120 mph for the Pro+, 165 mph with the roof closed for the Horizon), and those claims come from Hanso alone.

First, learn to read a wind number

  1. Gust or steady wind? A steady wind and a 3-second gust are different numbers. The pages we read don't say which they mean.
  2. Roof open or closed? Hanso's Horizon is 165 mph closed and 120 mph open. An open roof lets air through.
  3. Installed how? A rating assumes the maker's anchoring. Skip the anchors and the number means nothing.

What the numbers mean in storm terms

Hurricane categories use steady wind. From the National Hurricane Center (source):

Category Steady wind
1 74 to 95 mph
3 111 to 129 mph
4 130 to 156 mph
5 157 mph or more

So the Hanso Pro+ top number (120 mph) falls in Category 3 territory. The Sunjoy gazebos at 50 mph and the hot tub pergola at 35 mph sit below hurricane strength altogether. Sunjoy's manuals also say its products aren't made for high winds.
